History

Our Beginnings

In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson and Sargent Shriver launched the War on Poverty to right the wrongs carried out against the poor and minorities. In this broad legislation, Community Action agencies were launched and OCCAC was born, bringing local leaders together to solve local problems.

In 1965 a group of committed community members formed Okanogan County Community Action Council. We were one of the first Community Action agencies in the nation. Nearly sixty years later, the staff and Board of Directors of this organization have created amazing infrastructure for the community and provided help in the form of a hand up out of poverty.
